PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at University of Pennsylvania

The curriculum is designed to provide a robust foundation in both epidemiology and biostatistics, followed by advanced specialization through elective courses and intensive research. Core coursework typically covers essential topics such as advanced epidemiologic methods, statistical inference, linear models, generalized linear models, survival analysis, causal inference, and data science principles. Students engage in research rotations during their initial years to explore different faculty labs and research areas, helping them identify a dissertation advisor and research focus.

Following comprehensive qualifying examinations (written and/or oral), students transition to full-time dissertation research under the guidance of a faculty mentor. This culminates in the development, execution, and defense of a novel and significant body of original research. The program also emphasizes training in the responsible conduct of research, grant writing, presentation skills, and professional development to prepare graduates for leadership roles in their chosen fields.

Admission to the PhD program is highly competitive. Applicants are evaluated based on their academic record, research experience, and potential for success in a rigorous doctoral program. Key requirements include:

• A bachelor's or master's degree from an accredited institution. While no specific major is strictly required, a strong background in quantitative subjects (e.g., mathematics, statistics, computer science) or biological/health sciences is highly beneficial.
• Demonstrated strong academic performance, typically reflected in undergraduate and/or graduate GPA.
• Three letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with the applicant's academic and/or research abilities.
• A compelling Statement of Purpose outlining research interests, career goals, and reasons for pursuing this specific PhD program at Penn.
• Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume detailing academic history, research experience, publications, and relevant work experience.
• Official academic transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.
• English proficiency test scores (TOEFL or IELTS) for international applicants whose native language is not English and who have not completed a degree at an English-speaking institution.
• Note: GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) scores are not required and will not be considered for admission to Biomedical Graduate Studies (BGS) programs, including this PhD.
