Curriculum

The 60-unit MPH curriculum at UC Irvine provides a comprehensive foundation in public health sciences, followed by specialized training in one of several concentrations. All students complete core coursework covering epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health sciences, health policy and management, and social and behavioral sciences. This foundational knowledge is reinforced through an Applied Practice Experience (practicum) and an Integrative Learning Experience (capstone project), which allow students to apply theoretical concepts to real-world public health challenges.

Students choose from diverse specializations, including: Biostatistics, Environmental Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Health Policy and Management, Population Health and Data Science, and a unique Health Promotion & Disease Prevention concentration offered jointly with the School of Social Ecology. Each specialization features advanced coursework tailored to specific career paths, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for leadership roles in their chosen field. The program emphasizes both quantitative and qualitative research methods, preparing students for evidence-based practice and policy development.

Admission Requirements

Applicants to the MPH program must meet the following requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Official transcripts from all universities and colleges attended.
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • A Statement of Purpose outlining academic background, career goals, and interest in public Health.
  • A current Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • Successful completion of a college-level elementary statistics course prior to matriculation.
  • For international applicants, official TOEFL or IELTS scores (unless exempt). The GRE is not required and will not be accepted.

Application Process

The application process for the MPH program at UC Irvine involves two main components:

  1. SOPHAS Application: Applicants must complete the centralized application through the Schools of Public Health Application Service (SOPHAS), submitting all required documents such as transcripts, letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, and CV/resume.
  2. UCI Graduate Division Application (Supplemental): After submitting the SOPHAS application, applicants will receive instructions to complete a supplemental application directly through the UCI Graduate Division.
