Definition: Lead poisoning, also known as plumbism, is a serious and potentially fatal condition caused by the accumulation of lead in the body. It can affect nearly every body system, particularly the brain, nervous system, and kidneys, with no known safe level of exposure.
Lead is a toxic heavy metal that, once absorbed, interferes with various physiological processes, including enzyme function, neurotransmitter synthesis, and the production of red blood cells. Children are especially vulnerable because their developing bodies absorb lead more readily, and their brains and nervous systems are more susceptible to damage, which can lead to irreversible neurodevelopmental effects. Common sources of lead exposure include deteriorating lead-based paint in older homes, contaminated soil, lead pipes in water systems, certain traditional remedies, and occupational exposures. Symptoms can be non-specific and vary depending on the level and duration of exposure; in children, these may include developmental delays, learning difficulties, irritability, appetite loss, weight loss, and abdominal pain, while adults might experience high blood pressure, joint pain, headaches, memory problems, and reproductive issues. Severe poisoning can result in seizures, coma, and death.
From a public health perspective, lead poisoning is a critical and largely preventable environmental health issue. Its impact is often disproportionately borne by low-income communities and communities of color due to historical inequities in housing, infrastructure, and environmental regulation.
